Shamanism, A Basic Overview
Shamans, a bridge to The Mystery...Shamanism is an ancient form of mysticism. Although there are many localized variations, the basic tenet of shamanism is that all things are sacred and alive. Shamans are experts in this perspective and act as priests, holy persons, guides, researchers, explorers or professionals. Most have the ability to enter trances or altered states to access information related to their work.The shaman acts as a bridge. While in contact with life in other dimensions of the universe, they also use what is available in the local environment as an aid in returning a person, place or situation back into balance. The historical paths to becoming a shaman are many and varied. Before we had instant mass communication, and global travel, a shaman-to-be lived in a small village like all our ancestors. These small tribal settings were located in different ecosystems: some tropical, some cold, mountains, valleys, deserts, forests, etc. Each place had it's own unique energy, with different plants and animals. You won't find a whale in the desert or cactus in the sea, so each potential shaman had very different life experiences and local resources to work with. Also, mythological systems in different geographical areas varied a great deal. Individuals were called to become shamans for varied reasons. Some were simply born sensitive. Some individuals had a near-death experience, a mental break, disease or accident which caused them to search for a method for their personal recovery. Through trial and error they found a mineral, plant, location, ceremony or something to help cure them. Upon their recovery, they became shamans specialized to that problem. People came to them for their secret knowledge when in a similiar situation. Thus, a new shaman was born into the community. Still others had a big dream, went on a vision quest or entered an apprenticeship with another shaman. Some became shamans because it was a family tradition, much like doctors tend to run in families. Some were forced to become shamans because of a need in the community. Sometimes the shamans and village elders watched the children, searching for a distinguishing sign or omen; they looked for the troublemaker, the curious one, the adventurer, the leader or the shy one. When they found what they felt was the right personality, they often placed that child in training... even against their wishes, since the needs of the tribe were considered paramount. Today, there are still traditional shamans in every culture and continent helping their local people, but there are also modern shamans searching for heightened awareness in urban settings, people who have reawakened a personal interest in this ancient profession. On the other, they hear in pulpits that healing miracles have ceased and are not of today. The net effect is cause for confusion and even loss of faith. What is the truth about spiritual healing in today's Church? Why Sit Here Until I Die? The bible tells a story about four men who sat at the entrance of the city's gate dying with leprosy, an incurable disease which causes terribly visible swelling and sores on the skin, only then to eat inward to the bones. Because of this contagious and incurable disease, these lepers sat outside of the city because they were not permitted to live within the city. These men were faced with a fatal disease, were outcasts, and were starving because of a feminine in the land. Such a hopeless life and no perceived future, would make the average person throw in the towel and just give up on life -- but not these men. The Universal Connection I believe in a phenomenon I have been known to call a 'Universal connection'. Yesterday one of these destined occurrences deeply affected the mood I was in and took me from feeling pretty low and depressed to feeling a joyous epiphany. Let me tell you about what happened. You see, I don't believe in random, arbitrary coincidences. My understanding is that life is a combined relationship between humanity's freewill, and the will of a higher power who I call 'The Great Spirit". I believe in a paradoxical type of destiny that is both preordained by this higher power, but also can be altered by our own decisions that we make every moment of everyday. Opportunities and obstacles are presented and then we are to decide whether or not to take any specific action relating to the situation. Introduction to the Five Powers of Spirit You are a dual being. Part eternal spirit and part temporal body. Together these comprise your soul. The soul is more powerful than the spirit alone. You are the child of a Divine Father. He desires you to become a soul composed of spirit permanently united with an incorruptible, perfected body of flesh and bone. When we were young in the universe we existed as mere intelligences. Our Father gave us bodies of spirit that allowed us to grow and evolve. But without a physical body, we came to a place of limitation beyond which we could not pass. The Terminus of Existence Setting boundaries is a common expression that we hear almost daily. We hear of our need to set personal boundaries; an invisible dividing line drawn between ourselves and others, a line that represents the point where public space ends and our own private space begins, so to speak. The Jabbok Experience Jacob had sent his family on across the river Jabbok. Now he's alone in the night with the river; this smooth talking, manipulating, deceiving Jacob. Here he stands in the dark by the river Jabbok; the river that runs in the darkness between the life he has lived up to this point and the new life that could lie on the other side in the land of Canaan ? the Promised Land. All he has to do is cross it. Creating Our Own Emotional Chaos It's amazing how - even when we're working from a "higher vision" - we still see the people, the events and the circumstances in our lives with the same perspective: our own! It's "only human" to always be able to see how right we are in any given situation, and it's always difficult - and sometimes impossible! - to look at ourselves and our actions through the other person's eyes. But if we really want to grow - if we really want to know who we are - then we have to be willing to look at ourselves a little more objectively - a little more realistically - then we're used to doing, and we have to be willing to accept responsibility - both for the way we express ourselves emotionally, and for the effect we have on other people through that expression. I couldn't avoid hearing a loud voice over the clicking of clubs hitting golf balls. I'd seen him there before and we'd talked golf. Tonight his balding head reflected the lights of the driving range nearly the same way the golf balls did in flight. But it wasn't his shiny head that was annoying me, it was his foul mouth. Origin of Certain Thoughts (Part I) We all have spirit guides and we all benefit from their assistance, whether or not we recognize it. Only a few people can hear and exchange verbal communications with their guides, or occasionally see their foggy, ghostly image materialize; some people only sense their guide's presence; others know the signs that indicate their guide's presence; and still others do not believe these guides exist, much less assist us. The Gratitude Toll I very often see rants, complaints, wishes and dreams that have a similar theme, and that theme goes something like this: GOD Loves Us All God, what a wonderful spirit. He, is our ever present savior and helper in times of need. This God, who loves us and lives within the beleivers of Christ,ie, "Those that are saved". What, would this world be like without Him? Could this world, inhabited by humans live in peace and prosperity? No, it could not. Why, because this world is ever controlled by the devil, and his fallen elite. They have corrupted this world beyond our comprehension and understanding.
