When you are beginning your mantra meditation practice there are a few things you need to consider before starting to make your mantra meditation as effective and easy on yourself as possible.
Space is the first element that needs to be considered. It is a good idea to find a space that you can use only for mantra meditation, if you have enough space. A great idea for space is using a spare room if you have one and reserve this only for your mantra meditation practice.
If you don’t have a space that you can reserve solely for meditation, and lets face it, not everyone has that much space in their environment, there are other options. You do want to try and ensure that if at all possible that you always use the same space for your mantra meditation practice each time you meditate.
In order to choose the perfect space for your mantra meditation practice there are a few more elements to think about. It is important that the space you choose is as quiet as possible and this goes for beginners to advanced meditators.
You don’t want the space to be noisy where you will be distracted from you practice and not able to concentrate. Meditating while you can hear the television, the radio, your family or the neighbors chatting or the workmen outside or noises on the street certainly won’t help your meditation practice.
For an effective meditation practice the space needs to be quiet and tranquil to aid your concentration.
You also need the space to be private. Having a space where you husband, friends or children walk in at any moment is not conducive to a good meditation practice. If you can’t find your own space where this won't happen, you can take a few simple measures. Explain to those you live with about your meditation practice and that you need quiet time without distractions for this.
A method that can be used to let your household know when you are meditating is to advise them when that will be if you have a set time or to put a note on your door or on a visible space saying something like “meditation time - thank you for the quiet time”.
Ensuring these few simple elements are addressed prior to your meditation practice will make for a more effective mantra meditation practice.
