The Sky Is Falling! No It’s Not!
Aug 15th, 2011 by admin

Almost no one will disagree that we have a major economic crisis in the United States. Almost everyone has felt the effects in one way or another over the past two years. There are number of views as to what will happen next.

Some predict a total collapse of our country. They believe that we will end up worse than many European countries are today. For them, the sky is falling and we are headed to oblivion.

On the other hand, some believe that everything will turn out just fine. Some think and believe that because God has had His hand of blessing on our country for so long that He will somehow intervene and fix things. So for them, the sky is not falling and things will turn out okay.

I do believe that God has had His hand of blessing on this country for many, many years. It is so obvious that His grace and mercy have been abundant in this country. However, I do not believe that is a guarantee that He will continue to do so.

I don't claim to be an expert in economics, but when I was laid off in December of 2008, we had to make some serious changes. Those changes were a result of what I normally spent each month compared to what was now coming in. In other words, with a lot less coming in, we simply had to cut our spending.

We could have called our credit card company and asked for an increase in our credit limit and raised our debt limit. I doubt that they would have agreed, but if they did, then we could have just gone on spending what we were used to spending. However, eventually we would have needed to pay not only our obligations, but the interest on the extra credit, as well as the extra credit itself.

The point I am making is that most people understand that you cannot spend more than you make. I am aware of business loans that help businesses to continue moving forward. But, as a bookkeeper I know that if the company does not increase its revenues it will eventually go bankrupt.

The economic problem in our country has been brewing for many, many years. Politicians are quite divided on how to solve it. The truth is, there is no simple solution; there will be no quick fix.

Regardless of what new laws and programs are enacted, there will be effects and consequences. Only time will tell if the right decisions will be made over the next couple of months. How much of an impact and how long before a real recovery will take place no one knows.

So what can you do? What can I do? How do we, who are trying to live within our means, deal with consequences that are totally outside of our control?

First, we cannot get caught up in the panic rhetoric of, "the sky is falling," nor can we adopt the thinking that God will just take care of everything. We need to understand that there is a big problem. But, we also need to take charge of that which is in our control.

The scriptures exhort us to pray for our leaders; that is something that is in my control and is something that I do. The scriptures also teach that our God is a personal God and that we can turn to Him and trust Him. That is also in my control and is something that I do.

Our trust, our confidence, and our reliance must be in our God and not in our government. Those who continue to put their trust in the government to solve all their problems are looking to the wrong source.

In addition to praying for our leaders to make sound decisions, we should also being praying for our own personal situations, looking to God for His help and guidance. A number of records in the scriptures show God helping and protecting individuals in very serious situations, like famines and war.

I believe that our God is a personal God. I believe that He can help each one of us personally and individually. I believe that our loving God can reveal specific things to us that are just for us.

The decisions that politicians make are outside of our control. The consequences those decisions will bring are outside of our control. But, putting our trust and confidence in our loving God and Father, is definitely within our control.

We don't have to wait to see all of the consequences in full bloom. We can start today by doing what we need to do for the sake of our own family. We can certainly ask God to guide us and direct us.

I don't know what is going to happen in this country in the days ahead and neither does anyone else. But I do know that our God will never fail in fulfilling His promises when we trust and believe Him. Our God will not default!

Are You Stressed Out?
Aug 8th, 2011 by admin

"I'm stressed out!" "This is just too much stress." "I don't know if I can handle all this stress." Statements like those are far too common these days. This article offers a solid plan to get rid of the stress in your life.

The days we are living in can be filled with a lot of stress due to uncertainty. The economy not just in the United States, but indeed globally, may be cause for great concern about the future. Meanwhile, individuals and families try to cope with everyday life. As a result, many people live with a great deal of stress.

Many articles have been written about stress. I have spoken on a number occasions to groups of people about reducing stress in the workplace. I do know that ignoring the stress in your life can have some serious physical consequences as well.

So what is God's opinion about stress? There are Christians who believe that no matter what adversity comes your way, you are just supposed to accept it as God's plan. In other words, just suffer and endure because He has some kind of a reason. But even if you believe that, it doesn't get rid of the stress.

The Bible talks about being careful, or anxious for nothing. The word careful could quite literally be translated, "stressed out." The Greek word, merimna?, means to be mentally divided with cares and concerns.

We all have cares and concerns, but when those cares and concerns become overwhelming we become stressed out. So, that word, merimna?,, in the Bible is used both of having cares and concern, like we all do, and it is also used when we are overwhelmed, when we are stressing.

God's advice is that we should be stressed out for nothing. What? Is it possible to live without stress? Yes, and He tells us how.

The Bible says that in everything, by prayer and petition to God, with thanksgiving, we are to let our requests be made known unto Him. We remain thankful for what He has already done for us in our lives, and we let Him know about our current situation. Another verse talks about casting all your care (anxiety, stress) upon Him because He cares (has care and concern) for you.

Now some could dismiss this by saying that they have prayed and asked for help, but they are still stressed out. Perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss God's instructions on how to relieve stress. Maybe we should simply carry out His instructions, even if we need to cast our cares and let our requests be made known to Him a hundred times a day.

If we do so, the Bible promises that the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds. Isn't that where the stress factory is, in our hearts and minds? And when we are stressing, just how peaceful are we?

It is amazing how many people hear, in detail, other people's situations that they are stressing about. Some spend so much time telling others all about their stress. Maybe a better use of one's time would be to tell God, and keep bringing it to Him.

One final point is critical. Why would God ask us to make our requests known to Him? Why would He ask us to cast all our cares on Him? Why is there so much scripture about prayer?

The answer is so plain and obvious that it is so often overlooked. God wants to answer our prayers! He is a God of answered prayer. Why else would the scriptures say things like, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you?"

So we can choose to follow His instructions, because He not only wants to help and answer our prayers, but He also knows how detrimental living with stress can be. Stress takes a great toll on our bodies and minds. Some have stressed about a situation so much that the physical consequences in their body from that stress were far greater than that which they stressed about in the first place.

I am aware that there are a number of things one can do to reduce stress like exercise, laughter, getting more sleep, watching your diet, etc. I'm not at all negating those things. But, for me, the first thing on my list when I am feeling any stress at all, is to cast all my cares on Him, because He cares for me.
