I agree that one's spirituality can be separated from one's religion. One is a spiritual being first - then finds the path (which maybe a religion) to explore that spirituality

Spirituality is a deep yearning within to be at one and live in harmony with the highest power in the universe and to know ones place with in this universe.

Religion lays down rules and ideas that often have to do with how we are supposed to act in society, which is always open to interpretation by who is in power at the moment. Such rules come about through man's limited knowledge and thinking and have often been intolerant of other modes of living and thinking.

I do believe that most of the main branches of religion do have universal truths within them and can help you on your spiritual path. In fact, most main religions have a mystical or esoteric core that complement one another and are not in that much disagreement. You can be a very spiritual being within any of the named religions, but just being a member is no guarantee to such a state of being. It is up to you to develop your own spirituality and a real sense of doing everything for the greatest and highest good.

I feel there is a spark of spirituality that lives within all of us. That indeed, we are soul - and soul exists because God loves it.

For all of us, there is a struggle to remember our spiritual self and some do a better job of recalling than others. There is a tendency to repress that inner yearning for a deeper knowledge and way of being - and replace it with just the physical living and fulfilling of desire.

I also believe that spiritually, happiness and contentment can go hand in hand. The Dalai Lama said that "the very purpose of our life is happiness, the very motion of our life is towards happiness."

I feel that to be the best that we can be, is the secret to happiness and that must surely involve knowing ourselves as true spiritual beings and evolving with that at our core.

I don’t think it does at all. I think spirituality is really just a coping mechanism that people have invented and that is not based on any evidence or rational thought process. Spirituality is the sand in which people stick their heads like ostriches, when the truth gets too hard for them to accept. But religious people keep telling me that science and spirituality are two methods of understanding the universe. How can imaginary nonsense help people understand the universe?

There are universal truths and rules in this universe. Religions were created to help us know and understand those universal truths, so that we could go further and faster on our path to God. Role of Science and Spirituality in the pursuit of happiness

What do you think can contribute significantly in the pursuit of happiness- Science or Spirituality? I know that most of you would answer in favour of science. With its spectacular progress in last couple of centuries, science has definitely made human life much easier, healthier and comfortable with its innumerable inventions. Not only that, science has also provided human race with countless means of entertainment. It is no surprise that most of the younger generation is fervent enthusiast of Science.

Another factor that helped you in deciding in favour of science might be the ignorance of true meaning of spirituality and its misinterpretation as part of religion. There are wide spread myths that science is logical, while spirituality is only based on beliefs and superstitions; science can be applied usefully in human life, whereas spirituality is mere set of esoteric impractical philosophies.

If Spirituality is defined as the exploration of the inner world: your mind, intellect, ego, life energy and the true nature of your spirit, then you might reconsider your answer. Let me shed some light on the word "spirituality", before re-phrasing my question. As per Wikipedia, Spirituality is defined as "an ultimate reality or transcendent dimension of the world; an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of his or her being, or the deepest values and meanings by which people live." Spiritual practices, including meditation, prayer and contemplation, are intended to develop an individual's inner life.

In the light of this clarification, let me ask you a few more questions: "Do you think peace of mind and contentment are important components of happiness?", "Do you think Science has contributed to improve love, compassion, peace and contentment amongst people, societies and countries?", "Do you think that because of recent scientific progress, man has become even more stressful and restless?"

Well, now you might be interested in analyzing this topic even further. One of the well accepted definition of science is "the experimentally acquired knowledge of the objective laws that govern creation." Spirituality can also be defined as science because it constitutes of the knowledge of divine laws that governs our inner world. When the objective knowledge is applied in the external world for the material benefit of human race, it can be called as applied modern science. When the subjective knowledge that is acquired by self-analysis of inner world by the mystics and saints, is applied for the spiritual benefit of human race, it is called as spirituality.

A few distinctions between science and spirituality
Science explores the outer world and deals with the analysis of the objective world that can be sensed by our senses or instruments. Spirituality explores the inner world and deals with the analysis of the subjective world that is beyond senses i.e. the world of mind, intellect, spirit, love, compassion, peace and inner happiness. Science limits itself to the physical forms of energies that can be gauged, whereas spirituality deals with the supreme energy- the consciousness.

The goal of Science is to provide you with physical well being and physical comforts. The goal of Spirituality is to provide you with mental peace, contentment, love, compassion, peace and long lasting happiness.

Science has made human race selfish with no consideration to environment. During last century, due to scientific progress, human race has exploited and continue to exploit nature beyond viable limits. Spirituality refrain us from exploiting nature for our physical benefits and has thrived for thousands of years in true harmony with nature.

Science provides us with various means of deriving momentary sensual pleasures, whereas spirituality gives us insight to experience long lasting inner happiness by means of meditation, contemplation etc. Science tends to make us restless, whereas spirituality helps us to gain serenity of mind.

Just by exploring the outer world with the help of science, you get to know yourself as a limited body in the vast universe, whereas by exploring the inner world with the help of spirituality, you come to realize that you are part and parcel of the supreme spirit that is regulating the whole universe.

While exploring the objective world, science divides the object into parts and then analyze. In this manner it disintegrates the whole universe into different components. While exploring the subjective world, spirituality unites the whole universe as one non-dual conscious being.

Science and spirituality goes hand in hand in our pursuit of happiness
Unfortunately, we learn a lot about various streams of science and the outer world in schools and colleges. However, there is no methodical training available to educate us about the inner world and about life in general; about what is the goal of life; about how to cope up with the adversities of life; about self restraint and refraining from over indulgence in sensual pleasures; about the higher values of life. This is where spirituality can help us.

Science can definitely provide us with a lot of gadgets to make our life easier and to entertain us. However, you also need spirituality, with the help of which you can make proper use of science, without abusing it.

Einstein insisted, "Science without Religion is lame, Religion without science is blind." However, those scientists are very who try to spiritualize the Science and it's rare to find spiritual mystics who scientifically approach spirituality. Science, if not supported with moral values, might put on an ugly face of destruction.

Science and spirituality are integral part of human endeavours to gain fulfilment in life. Science and spirituality are inseparable in the interest of the wholesome human progress. Thousands of years ago, the mystics of India realized this and inscribed in one of the Upnishads, called Ishopanishad that "the life of bare contemplation (spirituality and meditation) and the life of bare activity (applied science) are alike, fraught with evil; but that he alone may be said to attain the goal of life who knows how to harmonise the two different paths."

For true human progress, money and materials alone cannot deliver the goods. The power given to man by science can be used to make heavens on earth if the due importance is given to spirituality as well. Our fulfilment is dependent on our ability to live in harmony with the external world, where science can help and our ability to live in harmony with ourselves, where spirituality can help. By maintaining the equilibrium of science and spirituality in our lives, we can not only enjoy the pleasures of outer world, but also the wholesome ever-present bliss of our spirit. This is the goal of our pursuit of happiness.

Tend To Your Own Happiness

Many of us wish for more happiness. We want to lead happier, more fulfilling, lives, but the sad truth is that so many of us that wish for more happiness spend much more time tending the happiness of others than we do tending to our own happiness. Happiness does not simply happen. A person does not suddenly stumble across happiness. Happiness is the result of careful tending and a person who wishes to be happy must tend to their own happiness. Tending to your happiness does not need to be difficult, complex, or time-consuming. It can be as simple as this four-step formula: 1. Trash your unhappy thoughts and trends 2. Envision yourself happy 3. Needs fulfilled 4. Desires fulfilled Making yourself a happier person really can be that simple. Step one is an important one because unhappiness is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Many people are unhappy because they don't believe they deserve to be happy and they lock themselves into patterns of behavior that make them unhappy. You must trash your unhappy thoughts and trends. Look inside yourself and find out what (and when) you think about things that make you unhappy.

Is there a specific time of day that you tend to be more unhappy? Is there a specific task or routine that seems to feed your unhappiness? Is there something that you do or think that contributes to your own unhappiness? Once you identify the areas of your life that cause you unhappiness you can find ways to confront it and combat it. Sometimes you can make a change to avoid the trouble spot altogether, but when that's not possible find ways to make it less difficult on yourself. Adjust your schedule or your expectations if that will make things better. Recruit help when you can. Just easing off one task or freeing up a few hours can make a huge difference in your attitude. When all else fails and you can't change or share something unpleasant than don't hesitate to give yourself a reward for accomplishing it. Knowing you will be rewarded can sometimes make difficult tasks more palatable. Step two is key. Some people have been unhappy for so long they have forgotten what happiness looks like and feels like. Envisioning yourself happy can help create the happiness habit.

We believe there's much to be learned, from reading about Saints in the Catholic Church who have preceded us. These are men and women who said "yes" to Jesus, knowing in advance that their lives would never be the same. They fell in love with Jesus, and through Him, their brothers and sisters. You and I are that family of Christ, these saints fought for. The battle for the Church over the centuries, has always been for the people of God. All the wars that have ever been waged, including those of the Twentieth century, have been for the people of God. There were those who wanted to protect and save the people of God; then there have been those who have wanted to destroy the people of God, hoping thereby, to destroy God Himself. We know that will never happen!

Woman has always played a major part in God's plan. When God made woman of man's rib, He formed unity. "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one." (Gen 2:24-25)

It is interesting to note that Adam, from whom Eve was taken, was placed by God into a deep sleep. Was it that Eve was to be brought forth by God Himself, of man but not by man? Could it be that God did not want Eve to be a cause of pain for Adam but a loving partner and companion?

When Eve disobeyed God's mandate not to eat the forbidden fruit, her action was to cause a reaction that not only would affect her happiness and life but that of her Adam and all generations to come. It reverberated down through the centuries, not to be overturned until, thousands of years later, another woman, a second Eve, was to make her Fiat with the words "I am the handmaiden of the Lord. Let it be done unto me according to your will." (Luke 1:38)

Eve's act of disobedience was to give birth to other acts against our loving God by the family of man that would follow. But God is a God of mercy, love and forgiveness, a forever God of Faithfulness to a very often unfaithful people. When I think of how lovingly God fashioned Adam and Eve, the joy He felt as He looked about at the life they would have, I cannot help grieve with Him as He, the Loving Parent saw them throw it all away. But our Compassionate God could not close the door on His Children.

To know of God's Love for woman down through the centuries, one only has to begin with the women of the Old Testament. If we listen to God's Word carefully, we see Mother Mary, the New Eve in God's promise to the serpent, of the woman whose "offspring will crush your head." (Gen 3:15) As one woman's "yes" was to lead to betrayal, God accepted another woman's "yes" to redeem that betrayal.

The echoes of the women before us resound even to the most sacred times in our lives. During the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony, one reading recalls Ruth's faithful response to her mother-in-law Naomi's plea for Ruth to leave her, "Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God." (Ruth 1:16)

Under pain of death, mid-wives disobeyed Pharaoh's order to kill all male children born to Israelite women. Because of one woman's courage, his mother, Moses was born and sent down the river in a basket. Another woman, Pharaoh's daughter, showed her strength by taking the Jewish baby Moses into her home and raising him. Because of their yes'es, the Jews were freed from the clutches of Pharaoh, and brought to the Promised Land. (Exodus 2:1-10)

In the tradition of our Jewish ancestors, for centuries women have begun the Sabbath on Friday night with the lighting of candles and recitation of prayers. The Faith of the Jews is passed on by the woman; for the children to be Jewish, the mother, not the father, must be Jewish.

Children have been taught by the mother from time immemorial. In our own modern society, the tradition is carried on. We gave a talk to a group of women in Louisiana. We said to them, "Are you aware that 85% of what is taught in your home to your children and your husband, is done by the wife? The bulk of informational material that comes into the house comes from the wife and mother."

We believe it's been part of God's plan from before the creation of man, that woman could bring us to the depths of despair, or to the heights of ecstasy. They have been given this power by God to be instruments of the greatest good, as with Mother Mary or, as in the case of Eve, the worst evil.

The focus of this article is on those Saints in the Catholic Church who have glorified God, who have given their brothers and sisters role models to follow, reason to hold their heads high. These are men and women who have contributed to a heritage of which we can all be truly proud.

Living in the now or being totally aware is most likely a totally new concept in the Western world. The current focus on achieving your targets and productivity, about what are going to happen in future makes us forget to be totally here in the moment. Is Scientology Right For You?

We've heard all the controversies surrounding Scientology that we end up making quick assumptions without taking the time to consider if they are rooted in facts or not. Try to look for information on the internet and I'm sure you're bound to get lost in the media circus. With that in mind, perhaps it's better if we ask the question, "Does Scientology work"?

The question is a fair one. Since Scientology is technically a religion, people should focus on its aims and ponder on whether it can improve spirituality and make people's lives better.

Before we proceed, keep in mind that this article is not an attempt to convince people to steer clear of Scientology. It's also not meant to convince members to join the fold. Rather, this is a discourse that aims to encourage a profound discussion that will help readers make an informed decision and discern how they can help themselves in regards to achieving spiritual fulfillment and happiness.

The Pros
One thing's for sure: majority of the organization's members are of the firm belief that the principles of Scientology have helped them achieve fulfillment in varying degrees. I don't doubt that for one second. The idea behind the process of "auditing" is sound and logical, after all. A two-way interview that promotes openness to the self and to others isn't a bad thing; it helps an individual come to terms with himself and in turn, pave the way to spiritual enlightenment. It's not really that different from the type of counseling done by psychologists and psychiatrists, and while that undermines the originality of the "auditing" process, it's also sound proof that it's far removed from being harmful.

The auditing process is very structured and can only be administered by trained auditors. An electronic device called the E-meter is also a requirement. This device it instrumental to the auditor in measuring the electric responses being emitted by the person being audited. The meter is believed to indicate whether or not a person is relieved from spiritual impediments brought about by past experiences. This proves that Scientology does not rely on pure guesswork, that it facilitates the rehabilitation of its members with an emphasis on standardized results. This, to me, is one of the most admirable aspects of Scientology.

One of the criticisms made on Dianetics is that its methods were just borrowed from several psychological practices. While that may be true up to a point, at least those "borrowed" elements have survived the test of time, thereby proving that they are universal in nature and can help Scientology members in dealing with their problems.

The Cons
There are a few cons that deter me from joining the Church of Scientology. What disillusioned me is the propensity of the religion to exalt itself from other schools of thought. As someone who values free inquiry, I don't want dogma to limit my perception about how I view myself in relation to other people. Spirituality is an ambivalent entity in itself, and since it can only be viewed in a human context, I believe that true enlightenment involves a more integrated approach when it comes to viewing the world.

An Addendum
Let me reiterate that the readers should only use this article as a guide. Really, it's all a matter of perception. In the long run, we choose our religion based on its compatibility with our experiences in life and how we view ourselves in relation to the totality of existence.
