Hindu Marriage Rituals

Hindu Marriage Ritual

Marriage Rituals celebrate the special bond of love that define the relationship two people. This ritual is often thought as the most auspicious occasion in a person's life. India being a multi-cultural country with diverse languages the marriage practices rituals and traditions also differ from one another. They also vary depending on the caste, religion, community of the bride and groom.

What rituals take place during a Hindu marriage ceremony and what is so special about Indian Marriage?

Hindu matrimonial ceremonies are usually conducted, partly in Sanskrit - the language in which most of the Hindu holy ceremonies are performed, and the local language. Hindus attach a lot of importance to marriages and their rituals are very vivid in nature and can extend for several days.

Some of the pre-wedding ceremonies include engagement and lagna-patra or written declaration of the marriage which is distributed amongst friends and relatives to invite them for the occasion.

Hindu marriage rituals are very elaborate and lengthy, with every step embedded with Vedic customs, symbolizing various aspects of life that is to follow after the wedding by the couple.

"Mandap" or a marriage stage is where the rituals are conducted. It is often decorated with flowers and with a sacred fire as the Hindu wedding ceremony begins. The groom arrives for the wedding with the family and friends and they are all greeted by the bride's family. The mother of the bride performs the welcoming customs and led the groom to the mandap.

This auspicious occasion continues by saying a prayer to the Hindu Lord Ganesha. It is believed that he may remove all obstacles, thusblessing the bride and groom for their journey ahead.

After the pooja, the bride is accompanied down the aisle to the mandap by her father.  The bride and groom are divided by a curtain, also known as antarpat. It is lowered once the priest recite a prayer for the couple.

Next comes an age old ritual that is considered very important, while giving the bride away. It is called as "KanyaDaan" & "Hastmelap". In the Hindu religion, Kanyadaan symbolizes the Groom as Lord Narayana and the bride in the form of Goddess Laxmi. The next sacrament allows the bride and groom to exchange "varmala" also known as "jaimala" and is crafted with flowers. Exchanging of the jaimala signifies the approval of one another and iy confirms their pledge of admiration for one another as partners in life.

The next Hindu matrimonial ritual is Saat-Pehraa in which the bride and the groom circle the holy fire with their wedding scarves tied together. The bride and groom seek blessing from God, as they take seven sacred vows together during this sacrament.

Then the groom ties the Mangal-sutra, a sanctified necklace made from black beads around the bride's neck. He then applies sindoor in the center-parting forehead of the bride's hair as a promise to fulfill her every desire. Finally, the wedding is concluded by the priest and the married couple is offered blessings by their family and friend for their journey ahead.

The last marriage tradition is vidai where the bride's family bids farewell to her family.

These wedding traditions are considered as holy affairs and couples have been happily following them with great significance.

Japan's Buddhist Monk Kukai

Kukai monk

Buddhism, contrary to Hinduism, is quite a homogenous path to liberation - the Buddha's Four Noble Truths clearly define it. The difference between Buddhism and Hinduism is that Buddhists do not consider Gods so important as Hindus do...

For Buddhists what is relevant is only the path to liberation or to nirvana - the path which is described by Buddha. Buddhism has two basic schools of teaching - Pali Canon Theravada, also called the Southern School (Sri Lanka, Indonesia...) and Mahayana - the Northern School (Tibet, China, Mongolia, Japan...). These two schools have their subschools, of which one is, Shingon, founded by Japan's Buddhist Monk Kukai...

Shingon

Shingon is an esoteric school of Buddhism started by a mysterious monk named Kukai in Japan at about the end of the first millennium (700-800 AD). This form of Buddhism is also known in Japan as Mikkyo (the secret path). Mikkyo originated in India and its practice is very similar to the Ganapatyas sect who are worshippers of Lord Ganesh. The Ganapatyas sect consider Ganesh, contrary to mainstream vaishnavists or shaivists, the Supreme God of the universe. Ganapatyas still exist in India, but they are not documented very well, for their practice is secret like that of Shingon. Most information from both teachings has never come out to the public.

Shingon is filled with rituals and magic and with invoking Gods. Still the doctrines of Shingon Buddhism and the teachings of Kobo Daishi can be said to begin and end with the aspiration for the realization of enlightenment.

But its symbolism is unusual. You may also notice, for example, by looking at the unusual statues of Kantingen (two Ganeshas, a female and male form of the elephant God making love - http://www.freebsd.nfo.sk/esoteric/buddha.htm), which priests in Japan hold from the public eyes and keep in great respect.

Kankiten

Kukai went to China where Hui-Guo, a master of Buddhism, initiated him to Chen-yen or Zhenyan, which became Shingon in Japanese (or Mantrayâna in Sanskrit). By the way, most historians date the presence of Ganesha in Japan back to times when this great monk started his Shingon sect in Japanese Buddhism.

The ways of worshiping Ganesha, Ganabachi, Vinayaka, or Kankiten, with this form of Japanese Buddhism hold attributes that make this cult different from all other Buddhist streams.

Kukai also brought back tea seeds from China... and was a famous poet.

Here is one of his poems... It is called Iroha and here is an English translation by Professor Ryuichi Abe:

Although its scent still lingers on
the form of a flower has scattered away
For whom will the glory
of this world remain unchanged?
Arriving today at the yonder side
of the deep mountains of evanescent existence
We shall never allow ourselves to drift away
intoxicated, in the world of shallow dreams.

The Importance of Dying Moments in Hindu Theology

Hindu dying

The moments before death hold a lot of spiritual significance in the beliefs of Hinduism. Unlike some other religions, the profession of faith in the divinity of any particular religious figure is not sufficient for salvation in Hinduism. Rather, it is one's own actions, done throughout one's lifetime, which decide upon the destiny of the soul, once it departs from the physical body.

Since Hindus firmly believe in reincarnation, it is a question of whether the departed soul, after death, is fit for salvation; or whether the soul needs to reincarnate again.

And, if the soul needs to reincarnate, what would be the characteristics of the next life? Will the person be reborn rich or poor? Will the person be reborn as an animal - or will the person be reborn as a human?

Hindu theology answers some of these questions, based on the actions that one does at the time of death.

If we are told that some tsunami is about to wash away our house and our belongings, we tend to immediately think about things that are valuable to us. We would take hold of all those things that are dear to us and then run away to some safer place.

Something similar takes place at the time of death. As soon as a person understands that he or she is about to die, her thoughts tend to switch on to things that she has held valuable throughout her lifetime. If the person A has become possessively attached to another loved and dear relative of his by name B, chances are that A would think of that loved and dear person B at the time of death.

And, as per this theology, A would most likely be reborn under circumstances that would reunite her with the loved person B in the next life. However, if the person A has been obsessed with hatred and ill will toward person B, chances are that A would remember B with feelings of hatred and ill will at the time of A's death. This would unfortunately affect the circumstances under which A would be reborn. A may be reborn under circumstances that could lead him to be the murderer of B in the next life. This would set a wheel of karma into action, where A and B would become bitter antagonists of each other for several lives, continuously.

In order to avoid such unfortunate circumstances, one is always advised to remain tranquil without holding any excessive animosity against any one. The best course of action would be to concentrate on the divine and be all the time immersed in devotional service to God.

Once a person does this through her lifetime, she is likely to remember God at the time of death. As per Hindu theology, such a person who remembers God at the time of death will have no rebirth, but will attain the permanent abode of God.

The Virgin Mary has long been the object of both devotional and scholarly interest, and recent years have seen a proliferation of studies on Hindu goddess-worship traditions. Despite the parallels between the two, however, no one has yet undertaken a book-length comparison of these traditions. In Divine Mother, Blessed Mother, Francis Clooney offers the first extended comparative study of Hindu goddesses and the Virgin Mary. Clooney is almost unique in the field of Hindu studies as a Christian theologian with the linguistic and philosophical expertise necessary to produce sophisticated comparative analyses. Building on his previous work in comparative theology, he sheds new light not only on these individual traditions but also on the nature of gender and the divine.
