How To Build Self Confidence

Now that the world has been influenced by wealth, power and such material needs, personal and spiritual growth has become a phenomenal task. All the inventions, new and improved tools and electronic advancements were created with the purpose of making life easier but are now threatening our basic perceptions of spirituality. Our basic needs have been transformed into more complex and multifaceted worldly desires. Our basic concepts of self respect and self esteem have been greatly influenced by print and electronic media, especially the internet.

All these contributions have made it difficult to balance out the divine and the earthly aspects of our life in this world.

All major religions of the world agree that the purpose of man is to serve their creator. Many theories and studies indicate every life on earth has a meaning or a purpose. Whether we consider our fate divine or our life independent, for spiritual and personal growth we need to find the reason for our existence. We are not born with a purpose but learn by the knowledge we gain in the world, the experiences we have, our relationships and the way we act and react to the past and present encounters. Looking back on these things also give us the ability to build self confidence.

While determining the purpose of our existence we discard certain morals and adapt to new beliefs and ethics. Once we can determine why we exist, we can then have all our physical, emotional and spiritual needs satisfied. Our life gets a meaning and we have a purpose to exist for.

All things are connected to each other, living as well as non-living. We need to rely very heavily on other creatures if we are to survive and grow ourselves. Our existence depends on them and theirs on ours. The realization of this concept makes one modest and considerate to the fellow beings (Humans, Plants, animals and the rest of the nature). Every creature has its own importance in this world.

We develop ourselves by learning our connections to the world and by respecting these relations. Once we have developed ourselves enough, developing self esteem gets easier.

As Jews around the world attend services on Erev Rosh Hashanah, the evening before the first full day of the Jewish New Year, the period most commonly known as the High Holy Days or High Holidays begins. These 10 days lead right up to Yom Kippur, the Day of Repentance. During this time, also known as the Days of Awe, we are told to turn inward and reflect upon our words and deeds over the last year. We also are supposed to make right our wrongs. Although we are told that our fate for the coming year has been "inscribed" in the proverbial Book of Life, we have 10 day to alter the decree. For on Yom Kippur, as the sun begins to set and the holiday ends, our fate for the year is "sealed" in the Book of Life.

Thus, these 10 days hold some import for Jews. However, even non-Jews can take advantage of the energy of this period and look at themselves and heal and correct their ways and the hurt they might have caused to others. Each fall, Jews and non-Jews alike have the opportunity to take the energy of this holiday to create something new. These 10 days provide a lovely yearly practical spirituality and self-improvement or personal growth practice.

In Judaism, we say the 10 Days of Awe are a time for t'shuvah. T'shuvah is a Hebrew word that means "to turn." Often we talk about t'shuvah as turning or returning -- to God and to ourselves -- to our best selves, to our true selves, to who we really are. Who is this person? I think of this person as someone connected to Source or our Creator, someone in touch with his or her soul's purpose, someone acting each day out of good and pure intentions and from a desire to fulfill that soul's purpose, someone acting in a righteous manner and for the good of others. I'm not talking about a saint; I'm talking about someone living up to their human potential -- someone being all that they can be, the best that they can be.

However, most of us "miss the mark" a lot of the time. In Judaism, that's called a sin. We don't live up to our full human potential. We set targets for ourselves and our arrows don't quite hit the bull's eye. (Click here for more information on using the New Year to hit your bull's eye.) During the Days of Awe, we examine where we missed the mark and we try to reset our targets. We turn inward and we examine our lives.

We also examine our actions and our words. Plus, we apologize for those arrows that went off in the wrong direction and may have done damage, for "misguided" arrows we might have fired, or for times when we didn't shoot our arrows at our targets at all. All of this helps us do t'shuvah and return to our best selves.

Knowing how to do all this t'shuvah can feel overwhelming. So, I have created a structure to help make it feel more manageable. I don't say the structure makes it easier, because the process is not easy -- and t'shuvah isn't meant to be easy. It is meant to be fulfilling.

To "do t'shuvah," I suggest doing an exercise on each of the 10 Days of Awe that helps you return to your best self in some way. I suggest focusing on the following areas: 1.Sins against other people 2.Sins against yourself 3.Sins against God 4.Turning towards your best self 5.Fulfilling youl's purpose 6.Achieving your human potential 7. Honesty 8.Communication 9.Payoffs for not being your best self 10.Faith

At the beginning of the Days of Awe, on Rosh Hashanah, Jews hear the shofar, or ram's horn blown. It serves as a reminder: Return home. Return to who you are. Return to your Best Self. Return to Source. At the end of the High Holy Days, on Yom Kippur, the final sound Jews hear is once again the shofar's blast. "Don't forget," it says again. "Don't forget who you are..."

Each week on Shabbat, the Sabbath, Jews can do a little bit of t'shuvah and return to their best selves again. Anyone from any religion can observe the Sabbath and do the same. The secular New Year provides another chance to do t'shuvah, to return to your best self. Yet, the energy on the Days of Awe is...well...awesome. Take advantage of it. Do the work. Turn. Return.

Gospel Tips by Roger Himes, The Gospel Coach

The gospel of the New Testament is the greatest life-changing, personal development and personal growth system ever seen. It is the gospel that Jesus came preaching. The time everyone had been waiting for was fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God was at hand. Thus, the first sermon of Jesus was, "Repent and believe the gospel" (Mark 1:14-15).

AN UNBELIEVABLE STATEMENT

This was a monumental statement Jesus made. Every preacher, prophet and Pharisee preached, "Repent from sin." This was still the message of John the Baptist, the predecessor to Jesus (see Mark 1:4). But Jesus totally changed the focus from repenting from sin — to repenting from wrong belief.

Everything begins with belief. If you want to experience true spiritual growth, you will begin with gospel belief. Throw everything else out. This is what 'repent' means: totally change your mind. The gospel is all about God. Paul refers to it as 'The testimony of God.' It's all about positive believing. Paul calls it "being transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom 12:2).

THE OLD VS. THE NEW

The Old Testament was a behavior code, but not the New. NO one could live by the impossible dictates of the Old (Acts 15:10). God gave those dictates and laws so that we would learn that we could NOT live by them. Instead, we should turn to the power of living life in the gospel that Jesus was to bring — the abundant life of Christ (John 10:10). Religion, in the form of the Old Testament, demands that we live life right, but the gospel is the power of God that enables us to live life right (Rom 1:16).

This is why Jesus came preaching it. The gospel produces and abundant, empowered life. Haven't you ever wondered why Jesus says, "My way is easy"? (Matt 11:28). And it's a life of being victors, not victims — of being overcomers not overcome. I have been living a gospel-charged life since 1990. I'm celebrating my 20th anniversary this year, so I know it works.

The Old Testament was dominated by The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Bad — followed by the law of God that wiped everyone out, thus producing an IMPOSSIBLE life. People could not possibly do all the good they should, and refrain from all the bad they should. The gospel changed all things. This is why Hebrews calls this total 'Reformation.' Paul says, "Old things have passed away; behold, ALL things are new" (II Cor 5:17).

This is why he calls us NCICs (I pronounce it 'Nick') — new creations in Christ. It as being a GodMan — a mixture of God and man. The gospel makes us into a whole new SPECIES.

OUR UNCTION IS TO FALL BACK

Jesus says it: "Many will say the Old is better." Today, too many Christians still try to live by the Old Testament, or by mixing the New with the Old. This spells total wipe-out. Jesus also warns us: "Don't pour New wine into Old bottles." But the mind and heart of man does it anyway. What can I say? We call it 'theology' — man's ideas about God. When you finish reading this. . . click here to DIG DEEPER into all of this, and see what happens inside of us.

Religion focuses on behavior. The gospel focuses on belief: "Repent of all other beliefs, and believe the gospel"(that's my paraphrase). Religious people never learn that good behavior will never produce correct belief, — but correct belief will eventually produce good behavior.

If you will keep reading these Gospel Snapshots, you will discover that the power of gospel belief will totally transform your life in every way for the better. It produces good roots in us that in turn produce good fruit (good behavior) in everyday life (Col 1:5-6).

If you are stuck in a horrible point in your life and you're just not getting anywhere, know this...

This too shall pass.

If you've just broken up and your heart still pounds with such a volume of hurt, you sometimes can't breathe, remember this...

This too shall pass.

If you just hit the all-time financial low and will probably have to cut your gym membership and even move to a smaller place...

This too shall pass.

This simple 4 letter phrase is probably one of the most important sentences you should be aware of. The Buddhists believe in impermanence.

Change happens, as we speak of it; the sun today is different from the sun tomorrow; a bowl of stagnant water is reduced in clarity or level even when left untouched; and even your body changes with every breath you take.

The moment you understand this concept of impermanence, the easier it will be for you to see all the upheavals and downfalls in life are just a state of the current situation and that one fine day...it too will surely pass.

Acknowledging impermanence and practicing it in your daily life will help you understand that the only way bad things will go away is if, you understand it will not be staying for too long. When you realize that, you will automatically and unconsciously work in ways that will accelerate the 'going away process' of such a situation.

Let's say that you are broke and have been surviving on cold potatoes because you somehow or rather didn't manage to pay for gas before your money ran out. This situation, too, will surely pass.

This makes dealing with the situation a whole lot easier. You stop lamenting about it. You stop wondering or groaning about it.

Carry this believe, that this part in life will surely pass, and it's true! Once you believe that things will change, you create the manifestation of change. It's amazingly simple.

Believing in impermanence is the start to the manifestation of change.

To be fair, this also works the other way around. Even the best of times will eventually come to an end. A great day out will always come to an end. A blissful lasting marriage will eventually end with death. A wonderful career will gradually reach its peak and retirement will be eminent.

The phrase "good times never last" is too true to ignore. But just by knowing that, you are wiser and stronger when things do take a dip. You will also begin to appreciate the good times more, simply because you understand the basic life concept that everything will pass.

Can you imagine a living a life without gratitude?

Let’s not. Instead let’s rejoice in all the beauty and good in the world.

Gratitude not only gives you a positive and healthy perspective on life, it boosts your happiness and that is a proven fact.

People who are optimistic, spiritual, and successful often consider gratitude to be their top value. So instead of spending your day feeling down or complaining about what you don’t have, just practice these 3 simple steps to get you out of your funk, feel uplifted and motivated.

Step 1: Verbally speak your appreciation.

“Saying thank you is more than good manners. It is good spirituality.” – Alfred Painter

This quote could not be truer. We often associate saying thank you with etiquette, but in reality, this simple act, even if it is subconscious, will increase your happiness level.

By saying thank you frequently, you are reminding yourself of all the amazing things you have. But let’s take it to the next level.

Don’t rely on your subconscious to do all the work. In order to really reap the benefits of gratitude you need to do it on a conscious level too. So speak up and let those you love feel loved and express your gratitude for them.

It can be something as easy as, “Thank you for listening to me,” or “I appreciate your friendship.” These simple statements work wonders for both you and the recipient.

But don’t stop there. Show your appreciation for the small, everyday things in life too. If you’re having your favorite ice cream, say it out loud.

Step 2: Start a gratitude journal.

“The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.” - Eric Hoffer.

It can be hard to remember all our blessings and even harder to show gratitude for them. That is why, in addition to speaking gratitude, it is also important to write down what you are grateful for.

Start a gratitude journal, a journal you can be proud of. It will be filled with all your blessings, gifts, joys, happy moments, and your appreciation for what you have in your life and in this world.

At times of sadness or doubt, you can easily and instantly give yourself a boost by flipping through the pages of your journal and be instantly reminded of how wonderful your life is.

Buy yourself a beautiful notebook or log your gratitude online. The point is to give yourself a written affirmation.

Step 3: Feel the joys of your life through meditation.

“I feel a very unusual sensation - if it is not indigestion, I think it must be gratitude.” - Benjamin Disraeli

The last step is to feel gratitude. I highly recommend a reflective meditation but you can also feel it through other forms of quiet contemplation, reflection, or even in hugging someone.

Meditating on all that you have and all that makes your life beautiful and joyous will increase your energy, let your vibrations circulate throughout your body, and most importantly gain a positive and healthy perspective on your life.

Through meditating on your achievements, joys, and whatever else that makes you feel good about yourself, you are reaffirming your accomplishments and will feel a stronger sense of power within yourself.

But my favorite way, by far, to show gratitude is in the hug. Hug as many people as you can everyday. How can one possibly feel sad when they are embraced by another human being?

These 3 steps are key to leading a happy and successful life. And it all comes down to gratitude. By practicing these steps everyday, you will notice a positive shift in your attitude almost immediately.

How to use affirmations? Like many other things, there are certain ground rules which should be followed to ensure that your self affirmations are actually effective. Increase your chances of having effective affirmations by knowing how to use affirmations. Below are some guidelines to practicing affirmations effectively.

STATED IN THE PRESENT When doing affirmations, we should state it in the present tense. To our brains tomorrow never comes, there is only the present. If you affirm for something to happen 'someday', you are just implying a vague time in the future. That is why it is so important to use the present tense.

SHORT AND TO THE POINT Do not use long sentences in your affirmations. Keep it short and to the point. This makes the affirmation easy to say out, it concentrates the focus of the sub-conscious mind and avoids distractions from happening due to having long sentences and many words.

REPETITION Make sure that you do sufficient repetitions of the affirmation. The more you repeat an affirmation, the stronger the impact on the subconscious mind and the stronger the neurological imprint on the brain.

EMOTIONS It is very important to do affirmations with emotions. When you show emotions it means that you really want it, that you care and most importantly that you believe in affirmation. Don't do affirmations in a weak and inspired manner. Your subconscious mind will notice pick that up. It will know that you're not serious about affirmations and that since you don't believe it, your subconscious won't make it happen.

USE STATEMENTS THAT ARE POSITIVE As much as you can, avoid using any negative statements or negative words when doing affirmations. Do not use words such as not, won't etc. You should affirm for what you want, and not affirm against what you don't want. So don't say 'I do not have low self esteem' instead say 'I have high self-esteem'.

PERSISTENCE Practicing affirmations will not bring immediate results. It will require some time for it's effect to materialize. That is why it is very important to be persistent and not give up. Often times people get discouraged when they see a lack of results. Remember that the only way to reap the rewards of doing affirmations is by being diligent and keeping your belief in it.

VISUALIZING As you are doing the affirmation, visualize it as well. See it happening in your mind. This adds the visual element to your affirmations practice. Typical affirmations practice only involve the auditory (sound) and kinesthetic (feelings) elements. Doing visualization will result in a more complete effect of the affirmation.
